2011 was a pretty good year for Glebe Symphonic Winds, a trip up to Glasgow to win a Platinum award in the National Concert Band Festival finals, over £5,000 raised for 2 important charities, a fantastic concert at Victoria Hall in Stoke in front of a very appreciative audience and a performance with one of the World’s leading Euphonium soloists, Dave Thornton.

Sunday the 21st November 2010 saw Glebe Symphonic Winds travel up to Great Sankey High School in Warrington to perform in the National concert band festival, this was just the regional stage of the event. We performed in the Open category which NCBF describe as ‘The premier wind band class’. Bands are given awards to show what standard their performance was, the highest of which used to be Gold but it is now possible to get a Platinum award. A gold or platinum award would have seen us get the chance to travel up to Glasgow for the National finals of the festival.

The band played fantastically and the adjudicators of Colin Touchin & Guy Woolfenden were impressed enough to award us a Platinum award so it’s off to Glasgow we go to see if we can repeat the success we had in Cardiff at the finals 2 years ago!

After success in the regional festival of the National Concert Band Festival (NCBF) we were invited to go to the finals on the 18th April 2009, this year held at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, Wales.

We were awarded a Gold award in the open section of the festival. Judges Simone Rebello, one of the UK’s leading percussionists, and John Reynolds, Head of Woodwind Studies at the Welsh College of Music and Drama were impressed by the band’s programme and performance commenting that we were “a band really worth listening to”. Our programme consisted of 3 pieces opening with Madrigalum by Philip Sparke, followed by Cat Skills from East Coast Pictures by Nigel Hess and we concluded with Dawn Flight by Philip Wilby.

The NCBF festival allows over 5,000 musicians from the UK to participate in a range of regional heats, all with the aim of reaching the NCBF Final, this year held on 18th and 19th April in Cardiff.
